New York’s obsolete domestic airport, La Guardia, is undergoing complete renovation. The new arrival and departure hall of Terminal B has now been opened. It was also embellished with German art.
It was the least popular airport in New York. Outdated terminals, poor connections, no space: there were many reasons why passengers regularly chose La Guardia as the worst airport in the United States. In 2015, the governor of New York state ordered a multi-billion dollar overhaul.
New York Airport reached an important milestone towards a new beginning last Saturday (June 13). The airport operator Port Authority put the new arrival and departure hall of Terminal B into operation. While air traffic is starting up again – still slowly – in New York, which has been badly affected by the Corona crisis, many passengers are unlikely to recognize the once hated airport.

The new building marks the largest phase of the renovation to date, which will cost a total of eight billion dollars. There are three times more check-in machines and lanes for security checks in the halls than in the previous building, which will soon be demolished. In the significantly larger space, passengers should be able to move “more safely and efficiently” even during the Covid-19 pandemic, said Governor Andrew Cuomo at the opening.
While La Guardia was previously criticized for its lack of dining options, passengers in Terminal B will now find a large number of offshoots of well-known New York restaurants. And there is also a lot on offer for the eye. Art installations by four artists adorn the new building, including some by the German artist Sabine Hornig.
From Berlin to New York
Works by the Berliner-by-choice, who was born in Pforzheim, have already been exhibited by renowned institutions such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum or the Museum of Modern Arts in New York. The artist created a photo collage for La Guardia Airport. It shines transparently through a large window pane.
In 2018, a new underground car park was opened as part of the renovation. A year later, new gates were built in Terminal C used by Delta Air Lines. The commissioning of a new arrival and departure hall in this terminal is also planned for 2022.
