After JFK and Newark, New York’s third airport – currently being modernized – will also be linked to the city center by rail service, probably from 2025.
La Guardia’s AirTrain cleared its last hurdle on Tuesday. The US Federal Civil Aviation Administration has in fact given its approval to the $ 2.1 billion project, which has been in limbo since 2014. It will complete the AirTrain JFK, a 13 km automatic shuttle connecting John- F. Kennedy to the New York subway system and commuter trains, and the AirTrain Newark, a 3 km monorail connecting Newark Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport station.
Today, the only mode of public transportation to get to La Guardia from New York is the bus that connects to the Long Island Rail Road commuter train network. Construction of the AirTrain could begin as early as the end of the summer, according to the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, the manager of the airport. Rail service is expected to link Eastern New York Airport to the subway and the Long Island Rail Road network in 2025, making it possible to reach the heart of Manhattan in 30 minutes.
La Guardia, dedicated to domestic flights, is located in Queens, a borough located east of New York. The smallest New York airport is in the final phase of a major modernization operation, which has already resulted in the reconstruction of the central terminal now connected to the new Delta terminal.
