The New York Knicks still have a hole in the playmaker’s position. That’s why rumors persist that Fred VanVleet of the Toronto Raptors is a possible candidate in the Big Apple as long as there is no trade for Chris Paul.
According to Ian Begley of SNY.tv VanVleet is actually a candidate in New York, the Raptors Guard will be free agent in the offseason and should expect a warm rain of money after a strong season despite the corona pandemic.
Contrary to other reports, however, the Knicks have not yet prepared an offer. Most recently it was reported that they would bid over $ 20 million a year to lure the playmaker to Madison Square Garden. Such an amount would be necessary to really get VanVleet out of Toronto.
Toronto wants to hold VanVleet, at over $ 20 million, the Canadians could not afford the Guard in view of the Free Agency 2021 and their goal of getting Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Knicks, in turn, have around $ 60 million this offseason that they can invest in free agents.
New York Knicks: Still interested in Chris Paul?
Interest in VanVleet could cool off, however, as the Knicks are currently going through tons of trade scenarios, including the possibility of guiding Chris Paul from the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Big Apple. The other scenario would be that the Knicks holding the eighth pick grab a point guard in the draft. With LaMelo Ball, Killian Hayes or Tyrese Haliburton, there are some very promising candidates.
VanVleet, on the other hand, would be a seasoned NBA player who just missed his first All-Star nomination in the past season. Over the season, VanVleet put up 17.6 points and 6.6 assists, hitting 39.0 percent from a distance in almost 7 attempts per game.
