New York judge rules protesters can be detained indefinitely

Hundreds of New Yorkers have been arrested in recent days during mass protests against the May 25 assassination of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.

A New York State Supreme Court justice on Thursday, June 18, dismissed a petition calling for the immediate release of the hundreds of protesters held by the New York Police Department for more than 24 hours, ruling that extraordinary circumstances warranted a indefinite detention. The law of habeas corpus requires the government to justify the detention of a person beyond 24 hours in court.

« Civil liberties protect citizens from governments that would be tempted to use the » crises « and the ” emergencies “ as a pretext to trample on their civil rights », tweeted Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez elected Congressional Democrat (DN.Y.). « It is a suspension of thehabeas corpus, and it is unconstitutional. It is deeply disturbing that the New York Police Department asked for it (NYPD) and authorized by a judge. »
