New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is sounding the alarm: In the midst of the pandemic, over 100 cases of a new disease are emerging in children. For the past two weeks, cases have been increasing in New York children’s hospitals.
Many doctors believe that Corona is responsible for the new, dangerous but treatable disease. It is a so-called multiple inflammation syndrome. It is similar to the rare Kawasaki disease, a vascular disease in children that in some cases can lead to organ failure.
Rash is also part of the symptoms
The nine-year-old Bobby is one of 103 children who were suddenly admitted to hospitals in New York with mysterious symptoms. His mother, Amber Dean from Rochester, describes the first symptoms. It was stomach pain, later also fever and vomiting. Only when he was much worse did she take him to the hospital. Appendicitis was suspected there. It was only when Bobby was in drastically worse condition that doctors diagnosed the new inflammatory syndrome. Bobby survived.
Symptoms also include a rash, similar to the rare Kawasaki disease. Many of the treating physicians associate the disease with Covid-19, as all test results indicate.
The age group between five and 14 years is particularly affected
The Northwell Hospital Chain Children’s Intensive Care Unit has treated 40 children. The age group between five and 14 years is particularly affected. Child intensive care specialist James Schneider sees strong connections to Covid-19. The inflammation values and other blood values were very similar to those of corona patients. In addition, all children either had acute Covid-19 or they tested positive for antibodies.
Nevertheless, the treating doctors are very careful. They had only had the disease for two weeks and there was still a lot to learn. The connection to Corona has yet to be proven.
Governor wants to give preference to children
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has become so concerned that he is calling for children to be given priority testing. Because of the 103 sick children, his 60 percent tested positive for Covid-19, 40 percent had antibodies.
“This is the biggest nightmare for parents. Especially because we thought children were less affected by the virus.” Andrew Cuomo, New York Governor
Eight-year-old Jayden Hardowar from the New York borough of Queens only survived the new disease after a cardiac arrest because his big brother had learned chest compressions from the boy scouts. He held out until the rescue workers arrived, Jayden’s heart could keep beating. This is another reason why his father Roup Hardowar has a message for the parents of this world:
“We thought our eight-year-old son was not at risk. It was said that children were not affected. But now we know better.” Roup Hardowar, father
Experts fear an increase in infections in children
Dr. James Schneider had to treat a large number of children with Covid-19 in his intensive care unit in March and early April, many of whom had to be ventilated. Due to the mask requirement and the social measures, the numbers have decreased, according to Schneider. But now there is concern that if schools open too early, more children will be infected with Covid again and, more recently, with the new and dangerous disease, multisystemic inflammation.
And he even has President Antony Fauci’s pandemic advisor on his side. He also warns against opening schools too quickly: “We should be careful not to assume that children are completely immune to the destructive effects of the virus.”
