A new legislative package that seeks to protect the rights of New Yorkers who receive public benefits and that will strengthen access to social services, was signed by the New York Governor Kathy Hochulwho defined them as an advance.

One of the laws requires social services offices to post a notice of basic beneficiary rights. The other ensures that certain Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients receive two Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) credit or debit cards.

“As New Yorkers continue to recover from the economic pains of the pandemic, it is critical that we ensure that public assistance programs adequately serve our most vulnerable communities,” he said. Governor Hochul.

“These bills will educate people across the state about their rights when receiving social services and ensure families don’t have a problem putting food on the table. I am proud to take important steps to protect and empower New Yorkers receiving public assistance because no one deserves to experience food or child care insecurity, homelessness, or any other life-threatening stress.” the state governor.

The Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgadohighlighted the importance of the pair of laws so that vulnerable New Yorkers have equitable access to social services and public benefits.

“This new legislative package enacted by the Governor will improve transparency and protect the rights of those who must seek these services, due to the difficulties they are experiencing,” said Delgado.

Senator James Sanderssponsor of the bills, highlighted the urgency that New Yorkers who need basic assistance must know their rights and benefits.

“This legislation will help people get the support they need for themselves and their families. Part of the role of a compassionate government is to provide assistance for needs that are not being met,” said the legislator.

The Assemblywoman Pamela Hunter He mentioned that the laws will also provide greater transparency and clarity about the benefits.

“When accessing public benefits, you must be clear and concise what you are entitled to. Beneficiaries may not know that they are entitled to hearings, emergency assistance, and other services. Physically posting these rights in social services offices is necessary, as those who use these benefits may not have adequate access to the Internet,” the New York politician said.
