New York is very close to April’s record of covid cases

(Bloomberg) – New York is approaching familiar and dangerous territory, with coronavirus cases just shy of the record for the worst day in the state, which was April 15. He’s about to break that mark any day now.

The state registered 10,600 new cases on Wednesday, according to data from the Covid Tracking Project. The numbers come on the cusp of what looks like it will be a long winter for New Yorkers, who have been discouraged from taking vacation trips and more restaurant restrictions are in sight.

Still, the pandemic looks much different now than it did eight months ago, when sirens blared through the empty streets of Manhattan. The number of hospitalized patients statewide, while increasing, is about a quarter of what it was in April when the coronavirus overwhelmed the health care system. Patients spend less time in the hospital and less often require intensive procedures such as intubation. Thanks to more sophisticated treatment, the virus takes lives less often.

New York is one of only three states that has not broken its record for single-day cases in recent weeks, along with Maine and Hawaii. That could be due to the magnitude of the first peak there, coupled with early and sustained restrictive measures, and an outflow of residents from the city.

New York City leads the state surge, accounting for more than a quarter of new cases, with hotspots in Staten Island and the western tip of the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens.

Nationwide, the U.S. reported 213,354 coronavirus cases on Wednesday, according to the Covid Tracking Project. There have been more than 289,000 cumulative deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
