New York is trying to build thousands of hotel rooms to house migrants, despite costs running into billions of {dollars}: report

New York City reportedly needs 14,000 hotel rooms to house migrants until next year, as the sanctuary city continues to spend billions to deal with the fallout from border crisis.

By New York Post pointed out that the city’s use of hotels for migrants would continue despite a significant decrease in migrant incidents at the southern border, and that the Department of Homeless Services is seeking a contract with hotels to provide 14,000 rooms fully provided for migrants.

As migrant numbers increased at the border in 2021 and 2022, tens of thousands of migrants made their way to blue cities like New York, Chicago and Philadelphia. They got help in 2022 when Texas Governor Greg Abbott began transporting migrants directly to those cities to relieve pressure on the border state. He singled out sanctuary cities — cities that limit cooperation with federal immigration law enforcement — because he said they fueled the crisis.

There were scenes of hundreds of migrants camping outside the Roosevelt Hotel at the height of the crisis. New York City officials now say more than 218,000 migrants have received services in New York by 2022.

Officials say they have helped complete more than 72,000 applications for work permits, temporary security status and asylum. The city also bought 47,000 tickets to help migrants travel to other parts of the country.

At the height of the crisis, the city welcomed an average of 4,000 migrants per week. But that number has dropped to the hundreds in recent months as the crisis at the border eases following a presidential proclamation by President Biden limiting asylum claims. The Advocate reported that more than 700 new migrants arrived in the town last week.

This week, the city announced it will close a large tent shelter on Randall’s Island. Authorities said the number of asylum seekers in the city’s shelters had fallen for 14 straight weeks and was now at its lowest level in more than a year.

“We’re not out of the woods yet, but we’re making no mistake, thanks in large part to our smart management strategies and our successful bid, we’ve turned the corner on this crisis,” Adams said in a statement. “We’re not doing our best every day to open new shelters. We’re talking about closing them. We’re not talking about what we’re spending .We talk about how much we saved.
