When the outside temperature in New York City reaches around 40 degrees in summer, locals and tourists long for a cooling off. But so far there are not many opportunities to swim outside in the metropolis. The East River is actually too dirty to splash around and too dangerous because of the current. Nevertheless, a pool is to be built right there – in the middle of the river.
The project called “+Pool“Has been in planning for over ten years. Now those responsible were finally able to secure an official place for the construction of the floating pool, reports “Travel and Leisure“: The Lower East Side waterfront north of the Manhattan Bridge.
“+ Pool” should consist of a children’s pool, a sports pool and a lounge
There, the plus-size swimming pool could soon be used by everyone as a small oasis. Each side of the pool serves a different purpose. While one side functions as a children’s pool, the opposite side forms a lounge for chilling out. The other two elements are for athletes. You could swim laps on one side and, for example, play water polo on the other.
So that 1,800 people can cool off every day, the 9,000 square meter “+ pool” should not be filled with chlorinated water, but with the water of the East River. The pool walls themselves should consist of special filter materials that clean the river water from bacteria, impurities and odors. In this way, around 2,271,247 liters of water are to be filtered every day, which not only enables carefree bathing, but also cleanses the river.

Swimming in the East River would be possible for the first time since 1938
However, it is still unclear when the $ 25 million project will be realized. The next step is for the organizing team to meet all health, safety and city government regulations in order to build the “+ Pool”.
Should the pool be built, people from New York and vacationers could splash in the East River again for the first time since 1938. Because even then there were similar pools for the elite in New York City. But at the beginning of the 20th century, the last river basin had to close due to the questionable water quality. With the “+ Pool” a piece of history would return to New York.
