New York is planning concerts and festivals as early as February. A model for Berlin?

Berlin/New YorkOn Tuesday, New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo gave a press conference in which he stated that he would like to take various steps to make cultural events possible again and send artists back to work. The conference focused on both short-term and long-term actions in New York State and New York City. “We need to bring the arts and culture back to life,” said the governor. “New York City is not New York without Broadway.”

The state wants to organize so-called pop-up concerts and is in contact with artists such as Amy Schumer, Chris Rock, Renée Fleming and Hugh Jackman. The concerts should take place in rooms where a minimum distance of 1.50 meters is possible and the seating is flexible.

The governor expressly said that he did not want to wait until summer 2021 with the concerts. The concert series organized by the state of New York and implemented by the umbrella organization “New York Arts Revival” is to begin on February 4th. At the same time, a pier on the Hudson River called “Downtown” is being built.Little Island“Where more concerts and the Tribeca Film Festival will take place in June. The pier is a kind of island that can be entered via a bridge.

Spectators should be tested

In the near future, the governor intends to set up pop-up test stations in front of theaters and restaurants with a low reproduction factor in order to facilitate the implementation of events and catering operations. He referred to a Buffalo Bills game last Saturday before 7,000 spectators and fans were tested.

U.S. chief epidemiologist Anthony Fauci said at a conference Saturday that he believes theaters may reopen in the fall but that audiences will continue to wear masks. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all theaters and cultural institutions in New York are currently closed. Andrew Cuomo said a long shutdown of cultural institutions will widen the gap between the privileged and the non-privileged. He therefore wants to take the necessary steps to enable cultural institutions to be opened soon.
