New York is paying millions to trapped protesters
The city of New York is paying millions to settle lawsuits from demonstrators who are said to have been attacked by officials after the death of George Floyd. Court documents Tuesday night said the city was paying $21,500 to each of the at least 200 arrestees at the protest.

$2,500 will be given to those who have been fined. All in all, this will cost the city administration around ten million dollars.
At the protest in the Bronx on June 4, 2020, the demonstrators said they were attacked and surrounded by police officers. This left them with no choice but to violate the curfew the city had imposed to contain the unrest. At least 61 people were injured in the operation. Police say they have revised how they deal with protests since the incident.

The case is one of several allegations of New York City Police Department mistreatment of protesters. The protests were directed against the police killing of Floyd in Minnesota on May 25, 2020. Similar demonstrations have taken place in cities and towns across the United States.
