Masters of the Dutch, German and Italian schools are exhibited under the title “Van Eyck to Mondrian: 300 Years of Collecting in Dresden”.

The only drawing by Jan van Eyck known to date is particularly celebrated: a preliminary drawing for a painting of an elderly man made around 1435/40 in silver and gold pencil. It is considered a key work in modern art history.

The precious drawings were transported by plane, lined up in particularly airtight air-conditioned boxes.

They were comprehensively protected – this included a separate, non-slip foam “bed” for each plant. For additional security, there are status reports that were drawn up in advance by restorers and that come into effect in the event of transport damage.

The cabinet was founded in 1720 under Augustus the Strong as one of the world’s first special museums for works on paper. Due to the pandemic, the anniversary exhibition was postponed by one year.

The masterpieces can be seen in the “Big Apple” until the end of January 2022.
