“Isaias” also brought conditions for tornadoes to develop. At least two people died in a trailer park in the US state of North Carolina in one of the often devastating air currents. In addition, some people were injured in the small town of Windsor on Tuesday night, the governor of the state, Roy Cooper, had confirmed on the TV show “Good Morning America”. The clean-up work on the site for permanent campers was still going on, but overall the storm damage in the region was less than feared.
Authorities in other parts of the US east coast also warned of tornadoes from the storm. In the New York region, the “Tornado Watch” observation level initially applied until the afternoon. This designation often applies to larger areas of land and calls for caution and preparation, unlike the more local and more urgent “tornado warnings”, which advise urgently to seek shelter.
“Isaias” hit parts of the Bahamas as a hurricane on Saturday, but weakened again to a tropical storm on the way towards the east coast of Florida. The storm did not hit land in Florida and was later upgraded to a hurricane again.
