New York is commemorating its more than 30,000 corona deaths – more victims than from wars and 9/11

A year after the start of the Corona crisis, the city of New York celebrated its more than 30,000 corona deaths in an emotional ceremony. Meanwhile, more New Yorkers have died from the virus than from the Second World War, the Vietnam War, Hurricane Sandy and the attacks of September 11, 2001 combined, said Mayor Bill de Blasio at the virtual memorial service on Sunday. He praised the employees of the health services as “heroes”.

The ceremony began with a minute’s silence in honor of the dead who died in connection with the coronavirus. Images of pandemic victims were projected onto the Brooklyn Bridge. The New York Philharmonic also played and a bishop, a rabbi and an imam spoke, among others.

With 30,258 corona deaths, New York is the city in the United States hardest hit by the pandemic.

The city administration had proclaimed the “Covid 19 Remembrance Day” on Sunday. Similar to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, she invoked the community spirit of the townspeople. The corona dead “were our family, our friends, our indispensable helpers on the front line – and above all – New Yorkers like us,” writes the city on its website.

“As devastating as the losses were,” said di Blasio, “those and their deeds persist which we have lost. What they have given, what they have created and the love they have given continues, «said the mayor.
