New York is battling an algae plague that can be fatal for dogs and children

“Dogs must be kept on a leash” – that is more true than ever in New York parks. A carpet of algae that is life-threatening for small children and pets has settled over some bodies of water.

They are the green lungs in the middle of New York’s gray-on-gray: the city parks. Famous all over the world as popular tourist destinations, the green spaces are also a place of relaxation and retreat for the city’s residents. But now a blue-green mud carpet spoils the New Yorkers’ late summer walk in the park. Because of a blue algae plague, humans and animals have to stay away from the waters.
