New York is an increasingly safe city

I am often asked if New York is a safe city… And I immediately answer in the affirmative, New York has changed so much in the space of 25 years. Harlem and the Bronx are no longer the cutthroat they were in the 1980s, and tourists can walk around the city fearlessly. In Manhattan, just see the change in Meatpacking, a district where no tourist would have wanted to set foot in the 80s and which has become one of the most chic districts of New York, with the opening of the High Line promenade, the arrival of the Whitney Museum, and a blossoming of shops, hotels and restaurants.
Another proof of this change in New York: crime statistics are declining year after year. And the mayor of New York has even just announced a new step: from Friday, October 12 to Sunday, October 14, 2018, New York had its first weekend without a single shot since 1993.

“Neighborhood police bring our communities together”

“When you think of our history and the challenges the New York Police (NYPD) faced, it’s absolutely extraordinary,” commented Bill de Blasio, the mayor of New York, who recalls that New York has 8, 6 million inhabitants.
“It works because the NYPD has the best strategy, the best training, because neighborhood policing brings our communities and our police together, because they share information for a common good like never before, because this department never relies on its. laurels ”, added Bill de Blasio

Efforts still to be made

All is obviously not rosy and the American metropolis must continue its efforts. After a weekend without a gunshot, the truce was shattered by the murder of a man Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, at 1:15 p.m. on Aqueduct Avenue in the West Bronx. A district far from any tourist attraction and which is still one of the problem districts.
In total, the homicide tally in New York has stood at 600 victims since the start of 2018, down 1.1% from last year. By comparison, France as a whole accumulated 825 homicides in 2017. The main hot spots in New York remain in the Bronx and Brooklyn, knowing that these are mainly incidents related to settling of scores between rival gangs, especially for the control of the drug market. So again, as a tourist, you basically have nothing to fear, unless you’re going to hang out deep in Brooklyn in search of adventure …
