NEW YORK — Governor Kathy Hochul announced Thursday that New York State has received a $28 million grant from the US Department of Education for the competitive seventh grade scholarship program. Gain awareness and readiness for college programsto increase college and career readiness for the state’s more than 6,200 low-income students.
The program GET READY will help New York City students attending high poverty middle and high schools prepare for and succeed in college.
“My administration is committed to expanding equitable access to higher education for all New York students,” Governor Hochul said. “By providing resources to students from low-income families, we are removing barriers to postsecondary education and ensuring that all New Yorkers have the tools they need to thrive. Setting our students up for success will help them have the most competitiveness advantage in our state, nation and beyond.”
Students entering seventh grade through freshman year of college will have access to support services, including mentoring and homework assistance, academic counseling, mentoring, college and career counseling, financial education, college tours, and professional academies. be successful in college. NYGEAR UP also provides parenting/guardian and professional development services to teachers, counselors and administrators.
This is the fourth consecutive GEAR UP award received by New York State and one of only two GEAR UP states funded in 2022 by the US Department of Education. The NYGEAR UP program will be administered by the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation in cooperation with the State University of New York, the City University of New York, the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities, the Department of Labor of the State of New York and various other associations of state bodies.
