The marriage, organized in the greatest secrecy, is that of the grandson of a great rabbi. No written invitation was made: the time and date of the union were transmitted by word of mouth.
Crowded in, the guests danced and sang at the top of their lungs during the event on November 8, uncovered by the New York Post, on Saturday.
The organizers tried to hide the marriage of Yoel Teitelbaum, grandson of Chief Rabbi Satmar Aaron Teitelbaum, from “the voracious press and government officials,” a detailed account in the Yiddish newspaper Der Blatt read.
“Due to the current situation with government restrictions, the preparations have been made secretly and discreetly, so as not to attract the attention of foreigners,” the newspaper reported in its November 13 edition.
“In recent weeks, the organizers have worked tirelessly to organize everything in the best possible way. All notices of upcoming celebrations were passed by word of mouth, without written notice, without posters on synagogue walls, without mailed invitations, or even a report in any publication.
The synagogue where the celebration was held has a maximum capacity of 7,000 people; it was packed, videos of the event show.
Last month, New York State ordered the annulment of yet another very large wedding in the Williamsburg neighborhood, where 10,000 people were expected.
For many, the desire to organize such an event despite the pandemic shows that the community shows contempt for the drama of the pandemic: nearly 2,500 people have died from COVID in New York alone.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo ruled the marriage showed a “flagrant violation of the law.” […] It’s illegal. It was also disrespectful to the people of New York, ”he said at a press conference on Sunday.
Governor Cuomo is now urging the city’s mayor, Bill de Blasio, to conduct a “full investigation” into the event.
“This is my information that the city is investigating. They should investigate, and if 7,000 people were at a wedding, I’m sure they’ll be able to shed some light on that, and then we’ll take the lawsuit, ”he said.
“The City is investigating the incident and will bring those responsible to justice,” Avery Cohen, spokesman for Mayor Bill de Blasio, said in a brief statement to the gothamist media outlet.
