New York Invaded by Clouds of Aphids: Impressive but Harmless Presence

New York has been invaded for several days by clouds of aphids. An “impressive and unpleasant” presence which can be explained by various reasons according to François Lasserre, entomologist and vice-president of the office for insects.

After the smoke from the fires in Canada, New York is this time invaded by clouds of insects. Aphids move in swarms and poison the lives of the inhabitants of the megalopolis.

A New York Internet user traveling by bicycle testified to his difficulty in getting around. On the images (visible in our video), the man tries to ride in the middle of a cloud of insects, even struggling to look at the road properly.

If these clouds of aphids can impress, François Lasserre, entomologist and vice-president of the office of insects, underlines that they are completely harmless. “It’s just impressive, unpleasant, unusual,” he notes, adding that the episode should “last a very short time.”

According to him, several causes can explain this invasion: “we say that it is multifactorial, it can be a milder winter or a harsher winter, a lack of predators”.

If no one can predict the end of this episode, it should be noted that female aphids can reproduce without fertilization. The proliferation could therefore still persist for some time.
