In the American city of New York, only people with a vaccination certificate will be allowed to enter restaurants, theaters or gyms. Mayor Bill de Blasio is making the measure mandatory for everyone who participates in indoor activities.
It is the first city in the US to introduce such a measure and, as far as is known, also the first western city. Its purpose is to encourage people to get vaccinated, especially with a view to the more contagious delta variant. “It is time for people to see that vaccination is literally necessary to lead a good, full and healthy life,” De Blasio said at a press conference.
Enforcement
In addition to visitors, employees must also be able to show a vaccination certificate. According to the mayor, it will not be possible to have a corona test taken as an alternative. The measure will come into effect at the end of this month and after a short transition period in mid-September, strict enforcement will be made, authorities say.
