New York Interfaith Disaster Services Coordinate Contract for Shelters and Hospitality Centers to House Asylum Seekers

As of July 1, 2023, New York Interfaith Disaster Services (NYDIS) coordinated a contract with major local authorities for about 50 shelters operating with 19 beds and 5 hospitality centers and churches in the five boroughs.

The program will last 24 months, specified the NYDIS and could be expanded, depending on the need and availability of each of the spaces.

Each of the religious institutions that wish to get involved with the initiative must meet the minimum space and security standards.. Click here to respond to the survey and apply as a possible refuge for asylum seekers.

“All host sites will be compensated for their operating costs and provided with a monthly fee for the use of space to cover utilities and general wear and tear”the website highlighted.

They also clarified that funds are available “to install showers and sprinkler systems.” Once the immigration crisis eases, such religious institutions will be able to transition to housing homeless New Yorkers.
