In light of the coronavirus pandemic, the city of New York plans to provide 74,000 air conditioners to particularly vulnerable seniors. In the first weeks of the program, around 4,500 devices were installed, eight times as many as in the whole of last year, said Mayor Bill de Blasio yesterday.
The air conditioning systems are designed to help risk groups stay at home. In the metropolis of New York, especially in July and August, the weather is often humid with temperatures above 40 degrees. The city is particularly hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
Most of the machines will be used in social housing projects. The associated agency NYCHA manages a total of around 170,000 apartments in the city, many of them to senior citizens. In addition, the city wants to subsidize the energy costs of around 440,000 families in the coming months with around 70 million dollars, promised de Blasio.
