New York: inmate knotted 64 sheets together

During a search, New York prison guards apparently thwarted preparations for an outbreak: In a prisoner’s cell in the Manhattan Detention Center, they found 64 sheets, carefully tied together, hidden under a sink. With the improvised rope, he could have abseiled from his cell block on the eleventh floor to the street, officials said.

The detainee is reportedly waiting to be tried for attempted murder. Now his cell has been searched behind bars as part of a smuggling investigation. Mark Peters from the New York Department of Investigation, which mainly investigates corruption cases against city employees, gave information about the action. A prison guard is also suspected in the smuggling case.

According to the AP news agency, the detainee did not admit an attempt to escape. But the investigators see no other explanation. They demonstratively unrolled the sheets in a gym to show the length. “Fortunately, they were discovered before he had a chance to test his skills on an escape,” said Peters. “And so the city is spared from keeping the state company when it comes to escape hunting.”

An allusion to a case that has kept New York in suspense for almost two weeks: two inmates fled in a spectacular manner from the high-security facility at Dannemora near the Canadian border. You are still not captured.
