After the good results obtained with a demo vehicle, the Department of Sanitation placed an order for seven units.
Mack Trucks reported that the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) plans to purchase seven Mack ® LR Electric garbage trucks, which will operate in each of the city’s boroughs.
In September 2020, DSNY received an electric vehicle from the bulldog’s signature for testing to verify its performance in the actual operation in Brooklyn.

“The order placed for seven additional Mack LR Electric trucks speaks to the strong performance of the LR Electric currently in operation,” said Jonathan Randall, senior vice president of sales and sales for Mack Trucks.
He added that Mack has long been the number one choice for garbage-focused customers, so they are poised to rank well when it comes to electric mobility.
The Mack LR Electric, he said, is equipped with the integrated electric powertrain and will help New York City and DSNY achieve their zero-emission goals.
DSNY collects around 12,000 tons of trash and recyclables daily with more than 6,000 vehicles, most of which are Mack trucks.
The seven battery electric vehicles (BEVs) will be located in the seven zones within New York City: the Bronx, Brooklyn North, Brooklyn South, Manhattan, Queens East, Queens West and Staten Island. DSNY will use a fast charger to recharge each of these units.
“New York City has set an ambitious goal of reducing GHG emissions by 100% by 2040,” shared Rocco DiRico, Assistant Commissioner for Support Services in the New York City Department of Sanitation.
In this sense, he added, DSNY acquires these vehicles to support this goal with a zero-emission truck that is also extremely quiet.
Series production of the Mack LR Electric will begin in 2021, the vehicles will be built at Mack’s Lehigh Valley Operations (LVO) facility in Macungie, Pennsylvania, where all of the company’s Class 8 models are assembled for North America and for export.
The Mack LR Electric Pilot features two 167 kW electric motors that deliver a combined output of 448 continuous horsepower and 4,051 lb.-ft. of torque available from zero RPM. The vehicle is equipped with a Mack proprietary two-speed Mack Powershift transmission and 46,000-pound S462R rear axles.

Four NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide) lithium-ion batteries, charged through a 150kW charging system, compliant with SAE J1772, provide vehicle propulsion and power for all on-board accessories, powered by through 12V, 24V and 600V circuits. The three-mode regenerative braking system accounts for the increased load on the garbage truck throughout the day and helps regain energy from the hundreds of stops the vehicle makes each day.
