Yankees and Mets could receive 100% fans
The Yankees and Mets will be able to increase the capacity limit in their parks from 20 to 100% beginning May 19, as long as the fans who attend are vaccinated against Covid-19.
Both teams announced that they will give out free tickets along with vaccinations.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the announcement of the increased influx Wednesday at a news conference alongside Yankees president Randy Levine and his Mets colleague Sandy Alderson.
“Theoretically if you are 100% vaccinated, you could fill the stadium 100% with vaccinated people,” Cuomo said. “People without vaccination will still have to keep two meters away.”
The teams will offer the Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical’s single-dose vaccine in the stadiums and the person who gets immunized will receive a free ticket.
“If we can encourage more people to get vaccinated by giving free Yankees tickets, we are in,” the team said in a statement.
The current requirements for fans to test negative for Covid-19 will be removed because the measure is cumbersome, Cuomo said. They will continue to be asked to wear masks. Unvaccinated fan sections will remain at 33% capacity.
All major league teams had to play the 2020 campaign, shortened by the pandemic, in empty stadiums. Cuomo allowed the New York teams to start this season at 20% capacity (10,850 at Yankee Stadium, 8,384 at Citi Field) and on April 26 indicated that they could increase it to 33% as of May 19 .
Cuomo took it further this Wednesday.
“We’ve been polling the fans,” Levine acknowledged. “I think most of those who come are vaccinated. Hopefully those numbers continue to rise. ”- AP
