New York, United States, is one of the dirtiest cities in the world. To remedy this, the authorities want to draw inspiration from the European model of waste sorting. Experiments are already underway and the first results seem satisfactory.

Collectors roam the streets of New York (United States) looking for aluminum cans or plastic bottles for a few dollars a day. If they are the faces of American precariousness, they also contribute to making the city a little less dirty. Kilos of waste are brought back every day to a large sorting center. New York is one of the cities that produces the most waste in the world. The megalopolis generates 20 million tonnes per day. In the streets, you can see full trash cans and black bags piling up waiting to be collected.

Harlem neighborhood is now less dirty

To better combat this chronic unsanitary condition, the municipality has taken the example of several European cities, those which practice individual sorting in the streets. The Harlem district has thus become experimental with large containers in front of buildings. With this sorting system, the number of rats has, for example, decreased according to residents. By 2026, the municipality will install public sorting containers in other neighborhoods. 150,000 places will be dedicated to them.
