New York high school students to return to class on March 22, mayor says

by Maria Caspani

(Reuters) – New York high schools will welcome students again from March 22, the city’s mayor said on Monday, which will be the last step in the reopening of schools closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

We have all the elements we need to get high school kids back to class, Bill de Blasio said at a press conference.

“We will restore all of our schools in September, period,” he added.

New York City closed schools in mid-November amid rising COVID-19 infection rates before gradually reopening classes, starting with schoolchildren and then college students.

Meisha Porter, who heads the New York education system, which has 1.1 million students and 1,800 schools, said about 55,000 high school students would return to class on March 22.
