New York heads for 10,000 deaths

The US state of New York, which has been particularly hard hit by the corona pandemic, is approaching the limit of 10,000 victims with still high death rates.

“758 people have lost their lives in the last 24 hours,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday at his daily press conference.

This puts the death toll in the state with just under 20 million inhabitants at 9,385. That’s about half of the deaths in all of Italy and just under 50 percent of the victims in the entire United States.

The stabilizing patient numbers in hospitals meanwhile continue to give hope: the number of patients accommodated in New York clinics because of Covid-19 has been more than 18,000 for days with only slight increases. In the face of calls for a quick reopening of the economy and society, Cuomo put the brakes on again.

This will happen as quickly as possible, but should not generate a new wave of infections. The governor stressed that no decision had yet been made on whether schools would remain closed until the summer vacation at the end of June.
