New York gun laws stricter, Vermont protests to relax rules

New York is once again leading the way in preventing gun violence with this common sense reform,” said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. “There is a clear link between gun violence and domestic violence. This law does something about that.”

No more license

After the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, which killed 26, domestic violence convicts have already been forced to surrender all handguns. Those rules are now being tightened up to all firearms.

In addition, the law prevents a person convicted of certain crimes from obtaining or renewing a gun license. In 2016, firearms were used in 35 domestic homicide cases in New York State.

Demonstration advocates

In the US state of Vermont, there have been protests against the tightening of gun laws. Gun-owning advocates handed out more than 1,000 gun magazines during a demonstration. The protesters hope to persuade Republican Governor Phil Scott not to sign the new law.

On Friday, a package of measures to increase firearms controls was passed by lawmakers in Vermont. The new law prohibits warehouses with high-capacity ammunition and so-called bump stocks, which can be used to convert semi-automatic weapons into fully automatic weapons.

In addition, the age to purchase weapons is increased and background checks are expanded.

Discussion about weapons in US in full swing: companies adjust rules themselves

After the shooting at a school in Florida earlier this year, companies are making it more difficult to obtain guns and ammunition.
