New York grants first 36 retail cannabis licenses

L’Cannabis Management OfficeThe body responsible for implementing and monitoring cannabis legalization in New York State, on Monday issued the first adult-use cannabis retail licenses to 36 applicants, including 28 people who got into trouble with the law and 8 nonprofits, including LIFE Camp, the first nonprofit led by women of color.

Applicants were chosen from a pool of 903 applicants, each vying for one of 175 planned retail cannabis licenses in the state.

New York authorities plans to issue 150 of these licenses companies, the remaining 25 are reserved for non-profit organizations. The first wave of licenses was reserved for businesses owned by people who have been disproportionately affected by the war on drugs.

The regulator also posted on Twitter that it would allow qualified businesses to get started with delivery services.

“This will help get sales off the ground and enable these small business owners to generate capital and grow their businesses,” the CMO tweeted. Officials have previously said they plan to launch legal adult sales later this year.

The state of New York has legalized the use of cannabis by adults in March 2021, but had not yet issued a license to sell it.

Among various reasons for the delay, last September a Michigan company sued New York State and its cannabis management office, claiming it had given preference to state companies. However, she was fired.

Under pressure from the launch of one of the most anticipated legal cannabis markets in the country, the CMO has decided to grant some dispensary licenses to entrepreneurs and non-profit groups, an important step that authorities struggle to arrest unlicensed vendors.
