New York, Andrew Cuomo. Plusieurs élus démocrates avaient demandé son départ dès les premières révélations émanant de plusieurs de ses victimes, dont des employées. ">
An investigation requested by the American justice confirms the accusations of sexual harassment against the governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo. Several elected Democrats had asked for his departure from the first revelations from several of his victims, including employees.
The very famous governor of the State of New York, Andrew Cuomo, could be pushed out after the conclusions of an independent investigation ordered by the American justice. According to the investigative report, this popular figure of the Democratic Party has “sexually harassed several women,” announced Tuesday, August 3, New York State Attorney Letitia James.
The investigation attributes to Andrew Cuomo inappropriate gestures, “unwanted kisses and hugs”, as well as “inappropriate comments”. Among the 11 victims listed are former and current state officials, including a woman who had been assigned to the governor’s protective service, at the request of Andrew Cuomo, after he met her in November. 2017, describes the report.
The 63-year-old governor, who reacted as soon as the report was published, said he had “never touched someone inappropriately or made inappropriate sexual advances.”
According to investigators’ findings, the governor and his staff “also took retaliatory measures against at least one employee for testifying,” a statement from the prosecutor’s office said.
“Finally, the governor’s executive team fostered a toxic work environment which made harassment and a hostile working atmosphere possible,” adds the office.
Cuomo had refused to resign
Asked whether he should resign, Letitia James said “the decision rests with the Governor of New York State. The report speaks for itself.” During his public intervention, Andrew Cuomo did not mention a possible resignation, seeming to exclude it, while several in his camp are still calling on him to leave his functions.
“He must resign,” said New York Mayor Bill de Blasio. “And if he continues to resist and attack investigators who have only done their job, he must be impeached immediately” with a view to being removed from office.
The governor, who had already denied the charges when they were made public, was heard at length by investigators on July 17. Sixty elected Democrats and influential figures, such as left-wing star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, called for his resignation, but he refused.
Andrew Cuomo had gained popularity for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, of which New York had been the American epicenter in the spring of 2020. He had established himself, thanks to his daily press conferences, as the chief general of the war declared to Covid-19. This media exposure and his newfound popularity had made him a competitor of President Donald Trump for a while on the American media scene.
