New York Governor Announces Thousands of Jobs for Venezuelan Immigrants with Temporary Protected Status

(CNN) — Thousands of jobs will soon be available for eligible Venezuelan immigrants in the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced this Monday.

Hochul noted that the state Department of Labor identified 18,000 vacancies at nearly 400 employers for Venezuelans who have the temporary legal status granted to them by the Biden Administration.

The governors’ announcement comes one day before the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) begins accepting applications for TPS starting this Tuesday.

Applications will remain open until April 2025, indicates the agency’s website.

USCIS anticipates that around 472,000 Venezuelans will be eligible for TPS applications, according to a press release from the agency.

The governor said the initiative will relieve pressure on New York’s immigration crisis by reducing the number of people living in shelters across the city.

“The key is so simple, so crystal clear,” Hochul said.

“They’ve come to work, so let’s put them to work; let’s do it,” he added.

The move will also help resolve the manpower crisis in the state, according to Hochul.

“We have a two-for-one solution. Now we have all these people who want to be here, and I have all these open jobs. If you put the two things together, you’ve solved the problem,” Hochul said.

Similarly, Andrew Rigie, executive director of the New York City Hospitality Alliance & Impact Foundation, expressed his support for the initiative as he believes it will benefit the hospitality sector, which has not yet fully recovered from the effects of the pandemic. of covid-19.

“This is an opportunity to staff up for the first time since Covid-19. We can do it,” he said during a news conference.

Despite calling the initiative a “good start,” Governor Hochul said she will continue advocating for the federal government to open work authorizations to more asylum seekers, since New York is already working at full capacity.

“We can only help those who are here. We are going to do it, we are going to focus on them, but we also have to be aware that this is not an open invitation to everyone,” he said. “We don’t have enough capacity to house people.”
