Governor Kathy Hochul announced a New York State investment of $430 million to build just over 1,500 affordable homes in the state.
“We also need homes for migrants, places where they can live, so that they can work when their permit arrives and they are not on the streets,” declared the governor in the Gowanus sector of Brooklyn.
According to official data, last year the rate of empty apartments fell to 1.4%, the worst figure since 1968. Among the 2 million 300 thousand rental apartments in the city, only 33 thousand were available.
Build for those most in need
“In New York City we are in the worst affordable housing situation since the 1960s. We have to build and we have to ensure that the vouchers reach low-income people, those who need it most,” declared Piernina Sánchez, council member of the district 14.
Among the projects that will be built in spaces that will change their use are:
- The Creedmoor psychiatric facility in Queens will be converted into 2,800 homes.
- The former Hilton hotel that was next to JFK airport will be a housing unit of more than 300 homes.

The Mortgage and Housing Financing Agency has a program that provides help to people so they can fulfill their dream of purchasing a home. Assistance is $15,000 for first-time home buyers or those who have not owned a home in the last three years, and the house must be your primary residence. “I helped six families, many of them were for closing and the state gave them the money for the down payment,” said Miriam Olivero, a real estate agent.
