The mayor of NY announced Wednesday that city ​​public schools, which are attended by 1.1 million children and young people, will close their doors again starting this Thursday due to the rebound in coronavirus.

“New York reached the threshold of an average of 3% positive tests over seven days. Unfortunately, this means that public school buildings will be closed from tomorrow, Thursday, November 19, as a precaution,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. on his Twitter account.

“We must fight the second wave of Covid-19,” he added.

The director of schools, Richard Carranza, specified that the classes will be offered only remotely until new notice.

The measure is questioned by many New Yorkers who stress that the rate of positive tests in educational establishments since their reopening in September is much lower than the average rate in the city.

Others wonder why close schools, with the damage it entails for children, when eating is still allowed inside bars and restaurants, albeit at reduced capacity.

The mayor, however, pledged with the powerful teachers union to close the establishments if the infection rate reached 3% for seven days.

New York, which was the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States in April and May, has registered more than 34,000 deaths from Covid-19.

Although the city and even the state have a lower rate of positive cases than most of the rest of the country, the number of cases is increasing.
