New York gets youngest US bishop

Pause Francis named two new Auxiliary Bishops for the Archdiocese of New York this week. Joseph A. Espaillat, who serves as a priest in the Bronx, and John S. Bonnici are soon to be consecrated bishops in New York Cathedral. That in itself is not special news, were it not for the fact that Joseph Espaillat is barely 45 years old. This makes him the youngest bishop in the US and one of the youngest bishops worldwide.

Joseph A. Espaillat was born on December 27, 1976. He currently heads the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in the Archdiocese. He is also a popular speaker at youth conferences. Since last year, he is best known for his popular podcast and YouTube film series about Holiness in the City. It is still unclear whether he will continue as an auxiliary bishop with those successful conversations about faith, music, sports, fashion and pop culture.

John S. Bonnici is 56 and has been a priest of the Archdiocese of New York for 30 years.
