A turning point in the New York police force: for the first time in the history of the US agency, a woman will take over the reins from 2022.

The police in the metropolis of New York will be headed by a woman for the first time from next year. Keechant Sewell will be the new head of the New York Police Department (NYPD), said newly elected Mayor Eric Adams, who will take office in January, on Wednesday. The 49-year-old had previously worked for the police department in Nassau County near the metropolis for a long time.

With more than 50,000 employees, the NYPD is the largest police agency in the United States and is currently headed by Dermot Shea. The new mayor, Adams, had once worked in the agency himself.
