From next year, a real beach will be built in the Mahattan district of New York, not far from the skyscrapers and the popular skyline around Central Park.
With an area of 2.2 hectares, the public beach on the Hudson River will be about the size of three football fields, the developers said. The riverfront site in southwest Manhattan is just minutes from the Whitney Museum and other attractions. The opening of the 900 million dollar (786 million euros) expensive project is planned for 2022.
It will not be a real beach for bathers. The water quality of the Hudson River has improved considerably in recent years. The recovery of the oyster beds – until the 19th century New York was considered one of the most important places for oysters worldwide – also indicates that the water is clean. But due to the strong currents, it seems very doubtful whether swimming in the Hudson River from the beach will be allowed.
