New York: Germans injured in attack in Manhattan

According to the Federal Foreign Office, there is also a German among those injured in the New York attack. The German consulate general in New York and the embassy in Washington are in contact with the responsible authorities in the United States, the agency said. Travelers are advised to avoid large gatherings of people and to follow the instructions of the security forces.

According to police, a 29-year-old man drove a pickup truck on a bike path in Manhattan on Tuesday and hit numerous pedestrians and cyclists. Then he crashed into a school bus. When he escaped from the car, security forces shot and arrested him. At least eight people were killed in the attack and around a dozen more were injured (read the detailed report here: New York’s Nightmare).

The federal government reacted to the attack with horror. The thoughts are with the victims and their families, tweeted government spokesman Steffen Seibert. “From Berlin to New York City: We stand by your side.”

The authorities meanwhile assume a lone perpetrator. US President Donald Trump spoke of a terrorist attack and announced tightened entry controls. According to US media reports, the investigators found a message in which the man stated that he had committed the crime on behalf of the terrorist organization “Islamic State”.

According to investigators, the suspect immigrated from Uzbekistan seven years ago. Uzbek President Shavkat Mirsiyoyev wrote a letter of condolence to US President Donald Trump that his country would use all resources to help with the investigation.
