New York: for the first time since March, the city does not report deaths – Télam

New York City marked a turning point by not reporting any deaths from coronavirus for the first time since March 12, according to data released late yesterday by authorities.

“Faced with extraordinary challenges, New Yorkers have done everything possible to stay safe during the crisis,” said city council spokeswoman Avery Cohen, speaking to local media when referring to the new data on deaths and infections in that city.

He added that “with hope on the horizon,” they will continue to do “everything possible to reopen safely without losing sight of the progress we have made.”

Data from the New York City Department of Health, which is reported with a 24-hour delay, sometimes varies with the figures provided by the state’s Governor, Andrew Cuomo.

The report of zero deaths marks a turning point in a city that had been reporting up to 500 deaths a day and that adds a total of 21,752 fatalities from the pandemic, the EFE news agency reported.

The latest figures offered by the City Council reinforce the city’s gradual reopening plan that will begin on June 8, a process for which mass testing of New Yorkers will be of vital importance.

According to figures from Johns Hopkins University, the United States is the country with the highest number of infections and deaths from Covid-19, with 1,872,261 and 108,120 respectively.

New York State remains the epicenter of the pandemic, with 375,133 confirmed cases and 30,090 deaths, a figure that places the region only below the United Kingdom, Brazil and Italy.
