New York, first US state to cancel Democratic primaries

The New York authorities on Monday canceled the presidential primaries of the Democratic Party, scheduled for June 23, due to the health crisis due to the coronavirus.

New York is thus the first American state to cancel the vote. A dozen other states have postponed their primaries while many others are setting up a postal vote. Senator Bernie Sanders was also removed from the poll in New York after announcing earlier this month that he was stepping down from the White House race. As a result, only one name was on the ballot – former Vice President Joe Biden – rendering the Democratic primaries unnecessary. These were originally scheduled for April 28, but had been postponed to June 23 due to the coronavirus crisis.
