A bronze girl in Manhattan reminds of women’s rights – now the “Fearless Girl” could soon be history.
A bronze girl who is 1.20 meters tall has been commemorating women’s rights in downtown Manhattan since 2017 – the approval for the statue of the “fearless girl” in front of the famous New York Stock Exchange expired a few days ago. Activists and the artist are now fighting to stay.
“I’m here to reiterate why the artwork should be preserved and why it is important,” said sculptor Kristen Visbal at the statue’s location. Local authorities in New York must now decide what to do with the “Fearless Girl”.
Symbol for women in leadership positions
The little bronze girl wears a flowing dress and a ponytail, her hands defiantly on her hips. In 2017, it initially stared at the famous “Wall Street Bull” statue a few meters away for a year and a half. Then it moved to the stock exchange and looked up to the important international trading place. In the past few years it has grown in popularity – thousands of people took photos with the statue.
For artist Visbal, the “Fearless Girl” stands for much more than just the power of women in leadership positions: “The questions of cooperation between the sexes and the diversity of all equality ideals that stand behind ‘Fearless Girl’ are so important we can fully realize our potential as a global society, “she says. The sculptor emphasizes that she wants to work with the New York authorities so that the “fearless girl” can stay in Manhattan.
