Flowers, bras for tops, super-long sleeves, these are some of the trends spotted during New York Fashion Week, which ended Thursday.
Here are the main trends of the week.
Instant fashion
The revolution started in February and has continued in recent days. Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren became the first two fashion giants to offer collections that were immediately available for sale.
Some are still resisting, such as Marc Jacobs, but the movement is underway.
Fashion Week becomes political
Rather far removed from the main societal themes, the fashion world has used the catwalks this season as manifestos.
The American artist Johny Dar presented a collection called “Jeans for Refugees”, while the Frenchman Etienne Deroeux has incorporated pieces of survival blankets into some of his pieces to evoke the same theme.
The Italian collective FTL Moda made him parade a young Indian woman disfigured with acid to alert on these practices.
The power of the flowers
Symbol of spring, flowers have found their way into dresses by Michael Kors and pants by Ralph Lauren, among many others.
Often present in the form of prints, they were also used in embroidered form or directly tackling the shape of a sleeve or the bottom of a skirt.
Bras
Many have made them tops, sometimes embellished with a jacket, like Michael Kors, Tory Burch or Phillip Lim. Some, like Alexander Wang, resorted to geometric shapes.
Very long sleeves
It all started on the streetwear side, with Kanye West’s Yeezy, Rihanna’s Fenti, or Hood By Air. These dangling sleeves which covered the hands questioned. Today, they have been adopted by the classics, Vera Wang and DKNY in particular.
Structure and construction
Several designers, already known for their work on volumes, have given themselves to very high-level technical demonstrations to bring a skirt, dress or sleeve to life. This was the case with Zac Posen, Vicky Zang and her princess dresses, and the Spanish Delpozo, perhaps the most masterful.
The torn effect
To brighten up rooms, several designers have made openings, often asymmetrical, to show off, as at Hugo Boss and Ralph Lauren.
