In the US state of New York, which has been particularly hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic, the relatively strict exit restrictions have been extended until mid-May.
In consultation with other states in the region, they were initially extended until May 15, Governor Andrew Cuomo said at his daily press conference today. How things go after that, one has to see, so Cuomo. Among other things, the restrictions stipulate that people should stay at home as much as possible, “non-essential” shops must remain closed.
Careful optimism
In the state, however, there are also increasing signs of a trend reversal during the crisis. The number of patients in hospitals has recently declined again, as has the number of patients in intensive care units and on ventilators. However, almost 2,000 new infections were also found, with an additional 606 deaths. More than 14,000 deaths have been recorded in the entire state of New York, which has around 19 million residents.
