The governor of New York expects the peak of the coronavirus epidemic in the US state rather “at the lower end of the range” of seven to 30 days. The number of known cases has risen to 92,381 after 83,712 the previous day, according to Andrew Cuomo. The number of deaths is now 2,373 after 1,941.
In the meantime, 21,000 medical professionals from outside the state have responded to the call to come to New York – a Covid 19 focus in the United States – and help out.
“Foretaste” for the USA
Cuomo said the New York crisis was a “foretaste” for the entire US. “Look at us today, see you tomorrow,” said Cuomo. With around 19 million inhabitants, New York is a “microcosm of the USA” with the metropolis of the same name, but also “counties where there are more cows than people”. Feeling protected in the country is a “false security”.
According to models, there could be 16,000 deaths in New York state alone, Cuomo said. The White House announced on Wednesday that there could be between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths in the United States from the coronavirus – despite containment measures. Meanwhile, the US Civil Protection Agency asked the Department of Defense for 100,000 body bags in view of the projected casualty figures.
