What many do not know: The American artist Andy Warhol was deeply rooted in Catholicism through his upbringing. What does religion mean for his work?

The deep roots of the US artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987) in the Catholic faith are shown in a new exhibition in New York. The Brooklyn Museum announced that it would be the first show to take on this aspect of Warhol’s work.
“Andy Warhol is one of the most celebrated and well-known artists of all time, but so far the influence of his Catholic upbringing on his life and work has been a lesser-known facet of his much-studied career.”
Around 100 pieces – including paintings, films, photos and personal items – can be seen in the exhibition, which is open from Friday and is scheduled to run until June 19, 2022. Warhol was born as Andrew Warhola into a family in Pittsburgh who emigrated from what is now Slovakia. His Catholic mother Julia, who later moved to New York with him, had a major impact on her son’s life and work.
The Brooklyn Museum, which opened in 1887, is the second largest exhibition space in the metropolis of New York. It houses scientific and ethnological collections as well as design and art from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.
