New York Empire bow without Clijsters, abdominal discomfort

Kim Clijsters and the New York Empire lost Thursday in their last group game at World Team Tennis, played at White Sulfur Springs, USA, with a 23-17 loss to the Philadelphia Freedoms.

Clijsters, 37, was left to rest for the fourth game in a row after abdominal pain. The Limburgoise also missed the matches against Washington Kastles (25-15), Orlando Storm (21-23) and Orange County Breakers (21-19).

The playoffs will begin Saturday and New York, fourth, already finds Philadelphia, first. The other semi-final of the playoffs will pit Orlando Storm against the Chicago Smash.

Kim Clijsters started his second comeback at the start of the year but only played two games before the end of the season. She is participating for the third time in World Team Tennis after two participations in 2009 and 2010.
