The city of New York goes to the polls to elect a mayor. Democrat Eric Adams (61) is up against Republican Curtis Sliwa (67). Incumbent Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio was legally barred from running for a third term.

Both candidates have been called crime fighters throughout their careers. Adams hails from a poor Brooklyn neighborhood and was involved with youth gangs before making a change and making a career in the city police and then in politics. He stood out in the 1990s for his stance against racism in the police apparatus. Sliwa is also from Brooklyn and, in his youth, founded a controversial but quickly infamous vigilante that tried to fight crime. He was kidnapped by mafiosi in 1992 and escaped seriously injured from his captors, who were after his life. Later he became known as a radio host.
The city of 8 million people traditionally votes Democratic, which makes Adams a favorite. He would then become the second black mayor of the metropolis. The job ranks as one of the most politically difficult in the country. It is the largest metropolis in the US because there are still at least twelve million people living in the municipalities around the city and they speak countless languages.
Outgoing mayor De Blasio’s strict corona measures have heated the debate, possibly in favor of Sliwa, but local media are not expecting a Republican breakthrough on Tuesday.
