Since mid-April, an average of 2,000 people have died of Covid-19 disease every day in the USA. There are now more than 80,000. According to a study, there could be thousands of untold victims in New York. Nevertheless, the state is loosening the corona measures.
In the US, the number of coronavirus-related deaths has risen to over 80,000. That comes from figures from the US health authorities. On average, 2000 people have died every day since mid-April. More than 1.3 million people have contracted the virus. The United States is the country with the highest number of deaths and infections in the world. The states of New Jersey and New York are hardest hit, with almost half of the fatalities.
A new investigation by the New York health authority suspects more than 5,000 additional corona fatalities in the metropolis. The study then suggests a total of around 25,000 fatalities in the big city on the US east coast. She examined what is known as excess mortality in New York City from March 11th to May 2nd – that is, the deviation from the assumed number of deaths during the same period in a normal year.
For the time, the agency counted 32,107 deaths in New York, which corresponds to an excess mortality of 24,172. Of this number of deaths, which is above the normally expected rate, 13,831 victims were confirmed and a further 5048 had previously been recorded as probable Covid-19 cases. What remains is the number of 5293 deaths (22 percent) who were not assigned. These could be “directly or indirectly due to the pandemic,” it said.
New York City remains in a state of emergency
According to the experts, the non-recording of these suspected corona fatalities could be due, among other things, to sick people who tested false negative, died outside medical control or whose death has not yet been linked to Covid-19.
Despite these high numbers, the strict corona restrictions in the state will be relaxed for the first time this week. Except, however, is New York City, which will remain in a state of emergency until at least June, as Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo imposed a strict curfew on March 22nd. Almost all shops had to close, and only employees in systemically important professions have been allowed to go to work since then. In three regions of the state, the situation has improved so significantly that certain companies are likely to resume operations from Friday, Cuomo said. The criteria for the easing include declining death rates and increased test capacities.
“We’re starting a new chapter today,” said the governor. According to him, the easing applies to the construction and manufacturing industry as well as to street vendors. Certain leisure activities such as tennis or visiting drive-in cinemas are also allowed again from Friday.
Meanwhile, New York Mayor De Blasio emphasized that developments in New York City are “going in the right direction”. However, the death rate and the number of hospital admissions will need to decrease further before employees can go back to work. It must be ensured that the situation has improved sustainably. As things stand, the economic standstill in the metropolis must be maintained until June.
