Unidentified and unclaimed corpses are usually buried on the island. Here are estimated to be over 1 million dead – from the US Civil War to today.
The recording was made on April 2, 2020 and is published by the non-profit organization “The Hart Island Project”. She helps people with limited resources access public funeral records and information about funeral procedures on Hart Island.
Director Melinda Hunt says to that stern, there would have been almost four times as many funerals on the island than in a normal week. That was related to the increase in coronavirus deaths in New York. Because corpses are not tested for the virus in New York, Hunt cannot confirm that the dead were infected with Covid-19.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference on April 6th that the city might have recourse to the infamous burial site. However, New York officials told the “New York Post” that no coronavirus victims have been buried on Hart Island so far.
As the epicenter of the corona crisis, the metropolis is in a critical, exceptional situation.
