A New York City doctor is accused of being a “serial rapist” who has transgressed “all standards of human decency,” according to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz.
Dr. Zhi Alan Cheng, 33, was indicted last week in a 50-count indictment for allegedly raping three women in his apartment and sexually assaulting three others at New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital, where he worked. as a gastroenterologist.
Cheng has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is being held without bail at Rikers Island Prison.
The prosecution is still working to identify more women they believe Cheng sexually assaulted, including one who may have been under his care at the hospital.
The accusations against Cheng include drugging his victims and recording videos of the assaults while the women were unconscious.
In addition, narcotic substances and drugs used to sedate patients were found in his apartment during a police raid.
Hospital faces accusations of cover-up
The hospital where Cheng worked is also facing accusations of a cover-up by one of the victims.
The youngest victim is suing both Cheng and the supervisors and the hospital. She alleges that she was attacked in her own room while she was admitted to the hospital and that, despite having identified Cheng as her attacker, the hospital failed to take adequate steps to investigate and protect her.
The charges brought against Cheng are serious and could result in multiple sentences of 25 years to life in prison.
The prosecution is committed to presenting the case to a jury to achieve justice for the victims of these horrific assaults.
Cheng’s lawyer declared his intention to fight the charges, and the case will undoubtedly generate intense legal and public debate about the responsibility of health professionals and medical institutions in cases of sexual abuse and assault.
